Sweets in store for Chardiet

Dessert and coffee will be provided by Marla Wolkowitz and Madeline Ehrlich when they host an evening for Culver City Unified School District school board candidate Laura Chardiet. The event will be held Sunday, Oct. 2, from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the home of Wolkowitz, 10811 Ocean Drive, Culver City. Residents are welcome to meet the candidate.

Chardiet will be presented with a Building Block for Education at the CCUSD school board meeting on Thursday, Oct. 4. The purchase of a Building Block (a brass plaque which will be mounted on the wall of the lobby in the CCUSD office building) raises money for the Culver City Education Foundation. Chardiet’s block was purchased by the community of La Ballona Elementary School in gratitude for the transformative effect she has had there.

“Laura has been such a wonderful spokesperson for our school,” said Principal Chris Collins. “She’s always telling people to come and see the programs we have here. Her enthusiasm has gotten other people excited and involved.”

In the years that her children attended La Ballona, Chardiet worked to build the PTA and increase parent involvement. She founded La Ballona’s Legacy Tile Wall and healthy snack expo. She expanded the school’s International Dinner Show, choreographing and teaching many of the dances herself. The event now draws 800 people each year.

“She’s a great problem solver,” said Collins. “She’s very fair-minded and inclusive, always trying to balance the interests and needs of everyone in the community.”
