Improving volleyball Centaurs give team effort
By George Laase and Mike Cohen
Improving their attacking, serving, digging, blocking, ball handling and serve receiving skills, the Culver City High School boys volleyball team has a winning league record with multiple wins this season against Inglewood and Santa Monica. The Centaurs, coached by Joe Manzo, also topped league opponent Beverly Hills and have recent wins over non-league opponents Chadwick (Palos Verdes), Bosco Tech (Rosemead), and Saddleback Valley Christian (San Juan Capistrano).
Playoffs begin this week.
The victory over touted Santa Monica, March 14, which prompted a string of Culver City victories in March and April surprised junior Wesley Dixon (OH, OPP).
“I am still in a little disbelief. We came out with a lot of intensity. They probably came in thinking this was going to be an easy win. But, we showed them. Everybody played their role on the team,” said Dixon.
For Centaur success, Dixon says the players have to show a team effort.
“When you have all three hitters going and the passes from the backline are good, it is hard for your opponent to see where the block has to be set up,” said Dixon
Players are sophomore Chandler Atterberry (OH, OPP, MB), senior Logan Brown (MB, OPP), sophomore Ryan Allison (OH), junior Ryan Armstrong (OH, OPP), junior Josh Ocana (OPP, MB), senior Sam Newman (OPP, MB), senior James Chandruang (S), senior Nathan Mosher (MB, OPP), junior Mahari Teclezghi (MB, OPP), junior Eric Hernandez (DS, OPP), Dixon (OH, OPP), junior Roy Gonzalez (S), and senior Cody Gartner (L, DS).
