Sister City gets exchange grant

Sister Cities International and Culver City are the recipients of a U.S. Department of State Youth Ambassador’s Program award. The program will bring high school students age 15-17 and educators from the United States, Canada and Mexico together for two three-week exchanges during the summer of 2012. Three California cities – Culver City, Modesto and Los Angeles – were selected for the exchanges based on their strong trilateral relationships with their North American partners.

The grant is an extension of an exchange program of the U.S. that illustrates the U.S. policy of engaging youth across America. The program will include high school students and adults who work with youth, and will focus on issues of poverty and the environment. It will showcase local and national examples of how cities and countries are working to alleviate the negative effects of both issues.

Three students will spend time in their U.S. sister cities and Washington, D.C., while four Culver City students will be selected to explore Mexico and their Mexican sister cities. All participants will be tasked to identify poverty and environmental issues in their community and implement an outreach project to address one of these issues once they return home.

Students selected for the exchange program will have all travel expenses paid by the program, including airfare, hotels and meals. Detailed information and applications can be found on our Facebook page: Culver City Sister City Committee – Youth Program. Applications are due by Jan. 16, 2012.
