School board candidates to campaign

Two candidacies for a pair of Culver City Unified School District board seats were announced this week. Laura Chardiet and Nancy Goldberg both announced their intentions to join the school board this fall.

Chardiet has not run for public office before, but as served as a classroom teacher for 10 years and currently administers a $15 million adult literacy grant for Los Angeles Unified School District. She has also served on the La Ballona Site Council, the CCUSD Community Budget Advisory Board, the PTA and booster club organizations.

“It’s about our kids and our schools, about how we can keep making our Culver City schools better, even in the face of unconscionable budget cuts from Sacramento,” Chardiet said. “I understand how budgets work and I know the needs of our schools up close and personal. I am confident that we can find ways to meet those needs and continue to improve our schools in spite of the budget cuts.”

Goldberg is a recently retired teacher of 41 years at Culver City High School. She said she feels the need to continue to provide the best education possible for the children of Culver City. “I want to be an advocate for Culver City’s children,” she said. “I understand what it takes to educate a child. It is more than just a teacher and a classroom, but that is where it starts.”

The election will be held Nov. 8.
