Culver City High School head coach, John Sargent coached the Red Team, along with North Torrance’s Howard Miller and Redondo’s Jennifer Dessert, in the 21st Annual South Bay All-Star Softball Classic at El Segundo Recreation Park’s Richmond Field.

Centaur Lorely Turcios played right field, but went 0-for-2 as the squad fell to the Blue Stars, 11-5.

The Blues used a balanced attack to defeat the Reds. Leading the way was El Segundo’s Gabby Valario, who hit a home run and drove in two more runs on two more hits. Pitcher-shortstop Crystal Maas also had a big game. As a pitcher, she struck out four batters in 2 2/3 innings and had a pair of hits and two RBI.

South Torrance’s Ashley Phelps added a two-run triple in the bottom of the ninth.

The Reds’ performance was highlighted by a run-scoring single from Jennifer Stevens (Redondo).

“It’s always fun to coach these games,” Sargent said. “These games showcase the top seniors. There was very good pitching and hitting.”
