On Earth Day, Nike and the City of Culver City closed down the 90 Freeway, welcoming some 7,000 runners, walkers and baby strollers to enjoy 10 kilometers of open, car-free road. This extraordinary event was a tribute to the first ever women’s marathon in the 1984 Olympics – held in Los Angeles and took place on this very freeway. The 1984 marathon winner, Joan Benoit Samuelson, now 60, led the 2018 race, running with her 28-year-old daughter Abby Samuelson.
