On Saturday, Nov. 12, the Culver City Symphony Orchestra kicked off its season by honoring America’s veterans at Veterans Memorial Auditorium. On display were the flags of the branches of the U.S. Armed Forces, courtesy of the Office of Veterans Affairs.
Conductor Frank Fetta directed the orchestra in a varied program dedicated to veterans. The program included:
- “The Daughter of the Regiment,” a comedic look at the military. The arias from the opera were used for patriotic resistance during wars of the 20th Century.
- “The Cello Concerto of Elgar,” which ruminates on the devastation and changes of culture brought about by World War I.
- Brahms’ “Symphony No. 1,” which though it does not have explicit military references, the German composer had a collection of toy soldiers, reflecting his discipline in his musical structures.
