One year at the paper is in the books

Well, it’s been one year as of this week. It’s been one roller coaster of a year. It was Fourth of July week 2010 that I began as editor of the News. I remember it vividly. It was a short week because of the holiday, so I had one day to put together a paper before going to press. Some people prefer to dip their toes in the water first; I suppose that I’d rather just jump right in.

It’s been an interesting year, with some important issues cropping up: oil drilling, the dirt lot known as Parcel B, the summer concert series, public transportation, the future of the Redevelopment Agency and, of course, parking, to name but a few. Some issues have been addressed, while others remain open questions.

During my tenure, I’ve seen a number of new businesses open their doors. There have been a few closures, as well – circle of life, I guess. One of the great joys of the job has been getting to know the inhabitants of this area. It’s been a pleasure to make the acquaintance of so many kind and generous residents, business owners and employees around town. It’s also nice to realize that there are many more folks still to get to know.

As I prepare for my sophomore season at the paper, I have a better sense of the calendar of events in store, which will provide some much-needed stability. But I’m certain that there will be some surprises along the way, just to keep things fresh. One thing, particularly, that will keep things fresh is the addition of our new publisher – Alan Moskal. We’ll miss Leslie Belfor, but rest assured, Alan is a charming and friendly guy. If you haven’t met him yet, I hope you get the opportunity soon.

Thank you, readers, for making me feel at home during my first year at the paper. I’ve truly enjoyed the experience and look forward to more of the same. Cheers.
