In a frustrating turn for many, the renewed mask mandate put into place on July 17 has delayed the city’s plans to test a hybrid meeting system meant to reintroduce in-person attendance after COVID-19 lockdowns forced them virtual.
One of the most deeply affected groups are seniors, who have had people speak at meetings on their behalf. Those that work with older residents attests that the technological boundaries have made it impossible for many seniors to stay informed on major changes occurring in the city.
But these issues are not limited to just seniors. Many regular speakers and other residents lamented difficulties with hearing speakers and being able to speak clearly through a virtual venue, and some feel that they are limited in what they can express via Zoom.
While the city was progressing towards that goal, a surge in COVID cases in LA County following the June 15 reopening of the state has forced officials to reinforce a mask mandate indoors, suspending plans by Culver City to begin reintegrating in-person attendance to council meetings.
The City of Culver City will continue to conduct City Council and advisory board meetings in a teleconference format at this time and until further notice.
The next city council meeting is on Aug. 9. For information, visit the Culver City Legistar page at culver-city.legistar.com.
