Coming off a second place finish in the recent Jose Cuervo Hermosa Beach Volleyball Open, Culver City resident John Mayer has been working on his serves, bumps and hits this past week to prepare for the Milwaukee Shootout, this weekend, at Bradford Beach.
Mayer teamed with Brad Keenan (Costa Mesa) in the Hermosa Beach event and likely will pair up with Matt Prosser in Milwaukee. Mayer plays in the Manhattan Beach Open, Aug. 24.
Mayer and Keenan lost a thrilling 22-20, 21-23, 15-9, to Cuervo powers John Hyden and Sean Scott in Hermosa. Hyden and Scott dominated last year’s Cuervo series but won only their second of the tour this year.
Hyden of Sherman Oaks and Scott from Redondo Beach led most of the first of the game, but Mayer and Keenan caught them and had a few one-point leads. Mayer and Keenan rallied to win the second game on a Keenan block.
Hyden and Scott pulled away in the third set, winning on Scott’s kill off Mayer.
