The holidays can be a stressful time, which is all the more reason to make healthy choices that will keep you ho-ho-ho-ing into the holidays.
While it’s important to connect with family and friends over the season, make sure to take time for yourself. Start with frequent five-minute solitude breaks, perhaps focusing on your breathing, which should immediately reduce stress. Ideally, set aside a longer period of time daily for stretching or yoga, either at home or in a class.
Between holiday parties and office treats, it’s unlikely this will be the time of year you’ll actually lose those extra pounds, but you can minimize the damage by just having a small portion of indulgent foods and opting for lean protein and vegetables for your main meals.
Drink plenty of water. While the chilly winter months don’t trigger your thirst as much as the dog days of summer, drinking plenty of water will combat the dehydrating effects of travel and alcohol and may also curb your cravings.
If you still have busy days of Christmas shopping ahead, aim for 20 minutes of exercise as opposed to a full hour. While an hour is ideal, 20 minutes of moderate exercise will elevate your mood and reduce stress levels. Working out with a friend will make you more accountable for showing up and add some fun to your routine.
Try to walk instead of driving from store to store. In Southern California, it’s easy to find outdoor shopping venues that will allow you to leave the car in a garage while you walk from block to block in search of the perfect presents.
Be consistent with healthy eating habits and exercise, but don’t beat yourself up if you miss a day. Just get back on the treadmill the next day and have a happy holiday season.
