It’s now an established fact that some of the best food in Culver City is served at the Citizen Public Market. The sushi, noodles, barbecue and fried chicken that’s on offer under that convenient roof is, as a rule, magnificent.
“Created in a reimagined historical landmark that previously housed Culver City’s Citizen Publishing Company, Citizen Public Market will continue its predecessor’s legacy as a central fixture of Culver City life,” they say online. “The perfectly positioned plot of land was originally purchased in 1928 by entrepreneurs Eugene and Kitty Donovan, who moved to Culver City from San Francisco after surviving the great earthquake and fire of 1906. With safety in mind, the Donovans hired the architectural firm of Orville E. Clark to design a beautiful building that complied with San Francisco’s earthquake building codes, as Southern California had yet to create guidelines.”
Obviously, the former site of a publishing company is close to our heart, and on a warm weekend afternoon we dropped in to try the incredible fried chicken at Go Go Bird.
“Go Go Bird is a Los Angeles-style fried chicken concept by Chef Brandon Kida,” reads their biography. “We proudly use the best chicken and ingredients for our homemade sides. Every piece is made fresh to order. The chicken is marinated with spices then fried and finished with a Szechuan-style chili oil for a crispy burst of flavor.”
One could be forgiven for thinking that chicken wings are chicken wings. How good could they be? The answer is, really, incredibly good. It’s no exaggeration to suggest that these are the best wings that this writer has ever tasted.
The wings are fried to a perfect crisp, and the seasoning is a revelation. We opted for the spicy option, and there was a hefty bite which meant that we had to keep a glass of milk handy. Still, we wouldn’t have had it any other way. Tasty and packing a punch, the giant-sized wings are a wonder.
They came with a side of hand cut fries that were piping hot and well-seasoned too. No fast food frozen fries here – we saw the potatoes get cut and put straight into the fryer, as the kitchen is open for all to see.
Their pickles and hot sauce was also wonderful, proving that they keep a close eye on the quality, and the details, of every single item they serve. That’s impressive.
