The annual Fourth of July fireworks held at Helms Field on the Culver City High School grounds has been canceled this year.
The Culver City Exchange Club, which has hosted the fireworks for the last 46 years, has had to cancel the event while the high school field is being renovated.
“It is a great event thousands of people look forward to every year and it raises tens of thousands of dollars which in turn gets donated to charities that support women and children,” said Exchange Club board member Todd Miller.
The renovation of the football field and stadium created an insurmountable obstacle. There is no other venue large enough in Culver City to host the fireworks display.
“The club met with the superintendent to see if there was a way to put the event on amid the construction, but with all the equipment and field in flux, it didn’t work out,” said Miller.
“The club also looked at other sites, such as West LA college, but none panned out. With the date coming rapidly and no other site available, the decision had to be made to postpone the event for one year.”
The fireworks show will be certainly be missed this year, but there is a small silver lining.
“Mayor Cooper suggested, and the council approved, using some of the funds budgeted for the fireworks show for another popular summer event; the summer concert series. This will allow us to have six instead of four concerts this year,” said Councilmember Meghan Sahli-Wells.
The fireworks display will return next year.
