Culver City High School continues to show the Southern California high school sports world why it is one of the top sports schools in the CIF Southern Section. This winter sports season the Centaurs qualified five teams in the prestigious CIF playoffs.

This year it was even harder to make the playoffs because the teams were picked by computer. Because of that system a lot of good teams were left out. That system relied on a lot of different elements. The Culver City teams satisfied the computer.

The girls water polo team lost their CIF Division 3 match on Feb. 4, to Portola 12-6. They ended their season as the Pioneer league champions. The boys’ basketball team started their playoff run last Wednesday against Brentwood in the Division 1 playoffs on the road. The boys went into the playoffs with a record of 22-6, which was good enough for second place in the Ocean League. Brentwood was 24-4 and they took first place in the Gold Coast league.

“Brentwood is one of the best teams we will face this season when it comes to executing offensively and defensively,” said Culver City boys head basketball coach Ray Singleton last Sunday. “They are very disciplined and patient.  We have to come out and be tougher than Brentwood and play our game. We are going to have to pay attention to detail.” If the Centaurs win, they will play on Feb. 14.

The girls’ soccer team also played last Wednesday in Division 3 when they took a road trip to Norco High School. The Lady Centaurs were 11-6 and Norco was 12-5-4. The Culver City girls have won 11 soccer games in a row, and they were 10-0 in their league which was good enough for first place. If they win their next game will be on Feb. 14.

The boys’ soccer team will play their Division 4 CIF playoff game on Thursday, Feb. 13, at Culver City at 3 p.m. against Irvine University high school. The Centaurs are 12-7 and Irvine is 9-4-3. If they win, they will play on Saturday.

The girls’ basketball team will also play on Thursday, Feb. 13, at home against Yucaipa high school at 7 p.m. The Centaurs go into this CIF Division 3AA playoff game with a record of 17-8 overall and 9-1 in the Ocean league. Yucaipa is 16-11 and 10-0 in the Citrus Belt league. If the Lady Centaurs win their next game will be on Saturday.
