October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Since the program began in 1985, mammography rates have more than doubled for women over the age of 50 and breast cancer deaths have declined.
Culver City Firefighters will be wearing pink during the month of October to raise money for breast cancer awareness and to honor those who have battled breast cancer. Funds raised through T-shirt sales and donations will go directly to The Susan G. Komen Foundation.
The National Breast Cancer Awareness Month program is dedicated to increasing public knowledge about the importance of early detection of breast cancer. Fifteen national public service organizations, professional associations and government agencies comprise the Board of Sponsors, who work together to ensure that the NBCAM message is heard by thousands of men, women and their families.
