Election resolution passes at council meeting

At the City Council meeting, on the evening of Monday, June 24, Action Item 1 (A1) saw the council unanimously adopt a resolution, “calling a general municipal election to be held in the city of Culver City on Tuesday, November 5, 2024 to elect three council members to the city council, each for a full term of four years.”

Further, the item required, “adoption of a resolution requesting the board of supervisors of the county of Los Angeles to consolidate a general municipal election with the statewide general election, and to render full election services to the city related to the conduct of said election.”

Little discussion was required, as the item quickly passed.

Later, the council offered enough “nodding heads” to send a motion to subcommittee, to open discussions on the idea of allowing 16 and 17-year-olds to vote in school board elections. Representatives from the Vote 16 group apoke eloquently, as they did last year when they missed out at the election by a handful of votes.

Action Item 3 (A3) also passed unanimously – the approval of an amendment to the existing professional services agreement with Urban Alchemy, in an amount not-to exceed $4,432,636 for the period of  July 1, 2024 through June 30, 2025.

This will see Urban Alchemy continue their work as the lead operator and service provider for Wellness Village (Safe Sleep). Also, “expanded evening and weekend homeless outreach services through the community, engagement and outreach team; and provision of 24-hour/7-day a week supportive service and care as a part of the motel master leasing and nutrition program, including a pilot safe parking program.”

Further discussion is required for Action Item 5 (A5), regarding childcare at council meetings. This idea was introduced pre-COVID, before any of the meetings were virtual and/or hybrid. Some of the council members stated that the introduction of hybrid meetings means that parents can participate, and that target has been met.

Vice Mayor Dan O’Brien said that he prefers people to be actually present at the meeting, and so he would be open to a trial period making childcade available.

Staff will come back with more information.
