Election looms large

As the Nov. 8 election draws near, the letters in support of the school board candidates are flooding in. I’ve said it before, but it’s worth repeating: I really enjoy the passion that this community has when it comes to local politics. Frankly, I’d love to get this level of response with other important citywide issues, but I understand that the school board elections are a high-water mark in civic activism.

In a recent conversation with a current school board member, I was told that past editors have attempted to print every letter that reaches this inbox. I don’t know if there were less letters in those days or if there was just more empty pages to fill, but it’s not a luxury of mine. As time permits, however, I’d like to try to get those letters online, so check our website and click on the “letters” section to find out what people are saying about the candidates. And again, to everyone who has written in, thank you for taking the time to voice your opinion.

This week, we’ve profiled school board candidate Gary Abrams, who styles himself an outsider to what he sees as a stacked-deck-like system, but is attempting to shed light on some recent school board decisions and points out that outsiders have won election in the not-so-distant past. Abrams backed away from earlier claims that the local newspapers were in the tank for some candidates as part of a Culver City political “machine” – too bad, I was hoping to learn more about such scandalous machinations.

Next week, we’ll be profiling incumbent candidate Scott Zeidman.
