Authorities have identified a Culver City man who died while climbing a rock formation in Joshua Tree National Park.

Mojica Antonio Coronel, 42, died about 3:30 p.m. Thursday at the scene of his injury, which occurred about an hour earlier at the “Hall of Horrors” rock formation, according to the Riverside County Coroner’s Bureau.

According to the preliminary investigation, Coronel collapsed and fell into a crevasse while climbing over boulders, the coroner’s bureau reported.

Ranger Dave Carney said someone reported a visitor injury at 2:50 p.m. Thursday in Hall of Horrors, a popular climbing area between Jumbo Rocks and Ryan campgrounds. Search and rescue workers found Coronel on a ledge 50 feet above the ground, and he did not respond to attempts to resuscitate him.

Coronel’s death was being investigated by the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department and Joshua Tree Park Rangers.
