Culver City Film Fest coming in December

This year’s Culver City centennial will be celebrated with the screening of over 100 independent films from around the world at the Culver City Film Festival.

Jon Gursha, the festival’s director announced that the festival will take place at Cinemark 18 and XD Howard Hughes Center, from Tuesday, Dec. 5 to Monday, Dec. 11. The Culver City Film Festival is an annual celebration specifically designed with the primary aim of bringing together a diverse group of filmmakers to share recent works and recognize local talent in a city celebrated for its cinematic history and in-depth cultural values.

According to a statement, submissions are now open for filmmakers around the globe to submit their short and feature films both narratives and documentary. A team of professional and highly experienced screeners has been selected to screen all the submitted films in accordance with the standards established by the organizers of the film festival. During the film festival different awards have been earmarked to be won ranging from; best family film, best international film, to best production design, best ensemble cast, audience award documentary, best short screenplay, best comedy feature, best short comedy and many more.

Films on the schedule include “Mourning in China,” “Rope Trick,” “Professor Phillips and the Devil,” “Four Day Weekend,” “The Online Date,” “Breakfast,” “Out With a Bang,” and many more.

Culver City-based actor Tim DeZarn’s movie “Buckshot,” about a country and western singer, will be shown at the Howard Hughes Center on Dec. 9 at 7:30 p.m. The film recently picked up the Best Director and Best Actor (DeZarn) awards at the Marina Del Rey Film Festival, and it also stars DeZarn’s wife Janine Venable-DeZarn as bartender Dixie.

“Buckshot” is a dark comedy about struggling country singer Charles Stillman as he tries to follow in his father’s footsteps and journey to Nashville.

“I just love the character,” said DeZarn. “That’s why I wanted to do the movie after reading the script. Usually I play tough guys.”

During the festival, there will be a number of celebrations to mark the centenary and Culver City’s rich history of film production. The kick-off party will be held on Sunday, Dec. 3 from 7 to 10 p.m. at

Rush Street bar and restaurant in Downtown Culver City. Thiose arriving an hour early can enjoy an Actor’s Workshop which will include panelists Stan Harrington, Kym Jackson, Michelle Lukes, Karina Matas Piper, Hoyt Richards and the Filmmakers of “Trouble is my Business.” That will be hosted by Kirk Ride from 6 to 7 p.m.

The awards show and ceremony will be held at Gravlax in Culver City on Dec.11 from 7 to

10 p.m. The awards ceremony will be the best of the fest and will include prominent actors, directors
