At the City Council meeting on the evening of Monday, February 10, Action Item 2 (A2) called for, “Discussion and Direction Regarding Potential Culver City Actions to Ensure (1) Continued Access to Reproductive Health Services; and (2) Continued Protection of LGBTQ+ Rights.”

Staff recommended that the council members discuss the item, and then give any notes to the City Manager, John Nachbar.

The council asked staff to return the City’s 2016 Anti-Hate Resolution, “with updates to emphasize Culver City’s support of all people, no matter who they are (including the LGBTQ+ and transgender communities), in response to the new federal administration,” according to a city update. “The City Council also approved using the City’s communications channels to share resources about reproductive rights and for the LGBTQ+ community.”

The Federal Government has made direct moves to erase trans people in recent weeks, including removing them from the Stonewall National Monument. South Carolina U.S. Representative Nancy Mace used ugly slurs aimed at trans people while the House was in session. It makes sense, therefore, that this City’s council would aim to provide comfort and real protection during a period of turmoil.
