City passes anti-hate measures

At the City Council meeting on the evening of Monday, August 12, Action Item 2 (A2) called for the council to designate September 21 to September 27, 2024, as “Culver City United Against Hate Week.”

The item also called for designation of the “Culver City United Against Hate Week” as a City-Sponsored Campaign, and “authorization to the City Manager to Administratively Approve Agreements, Permits and Licenses Needed for the Implementation of this Campaign to Promote Anti- Hate Awareness and to Reinforce the Message of Unity Against Hate and Hate Crimes within the Culver City Community.”

It needed a four-fifths vote, but in fact the vote was unanimous. $17,000 from the General Fund unassigned fund balance was set aside to cover city costs.

The passing of A2 occurred at a meeting that saw many public speakers demanding that the council agendize and pass a statement in favor of a ceasefire in the Israel and Palestine conflict. The vast majority of the speakers wanted a ceasefire, though a few were not.

Naturally, given the gravity of the situation, the words became heated at times, though everyone was heard.

Separately, Action Item 1 (A1) called for, “Discussion and Direction Regarding, (1) a Potential New Bicycle and Pedestrian Ramp and Pathway Connecting Ince Boulevard to Ballona Creek; and (2) a Potential New Bicycle and Pedestrian Bridge across Ballona Creek Connecting Jefferson Boulevard to Ince Boulevard.”

There was some discussion about whether to save money by only passing one of them (the ramp or the bridge rather than both), but ultimately the full item passed unanimously.
