For the first time in Culver City High School history, the track team will embark on a trip to Austin, Texas to participate in the legendary Texas Relays on Friday and Saturday. Texas, California and Florida are synonymous with great high school track and field athletes. This year Culver City will join the list of outstanding high school track and field powerhouses. The Centaurs will send eight runners to Texas to compete against some of the fastest runners in the nation.
The runners will be competing in the 4×100 meter relay, 4×400 meter relay, the sprint medley, the 300 hurdles and the 100 meters.
Some of the runners that will be competing in the relays are Dontay Mayrant, Duaine Mayrant, Ceven Harris, Zytel Boyd, Dominic Batiste and Kingston Waring. Waring will also be running in the 300-meter hurdles and Batiste and Harris will be in the open 100 meters. “It’s exciting to have a team that is talented enough to be invited to the Texas Relays,” said co-head coach Jahmal Wright. “To compete on that stage is something we will all remember for the rest of our lives.”
The other co-head coach for the Centaurs is Olympic Gold Medalist LaShinda Demus. Demus along with Wright are two of the best track and field coaches in California.
The Centaurs will return to Culver City on Wednesday, April 9, when they host Lawndale and Wiseburn Da Vinci in a tri-track and field meet at 3:30 p.m.
