The Culver City high school varsity football team completed a very successful seven-onseven passing league summer game last Tuesday when they edged University high school Wildcats 14-7 at Culver City. Summer workouts will conclude this week and the Centaurs will take a three-week break until August 10.

When the Centaurs return in August they will have to rely on a complete team effort to defend their Ocean league crown. “This is a blue collar team,” said former head coach and longtime assistant coach Cornell Myles said. “This team is young and we don’t have a lot of superstars but I see a lot camaraderie among the players. Every player has bought into the idea of playing together as a team.”

This year Culver City will have a new offensive line coach. Ralph Oliver, who played with head coach Jahmal Wright in the 1990’s hopes to bring back the days when the Centaurs had a dominating running game.

The past 10 years the Centaurs have relied on their passing game to win games. This year coach Oliver wants to run the ball more and use up time on the clock to give the defense time to rest and make adjustments during the game.

Overall coach Wright was pleased with the effort by his players this summer. “I saw a lot of good things this summer,” said Wright after the game against University. “As long as we continue to improve every time we step on the football field, we will be fine.”
