The Culver City High School spring sports teams are looking to spring into action during the last few weeks of the season. The boys and girls track and field teams lead the way as genuine title contenders and two other teams have a legitimate chance to make the CIF playoffs, but it all depends on two factors.
Winning games and track meets, and staying healthy.
The track and field teams are fresh off some exciting performances at the top high school track and field meet in the nation, the Arcadia Invitational. Last Saturday the sun was out early, but as it disappeared and the weather up against the San Gabriel mountains became extremely cold, the group of elite athletes continued to burn on the track.
Included in that special group of track and field stars were several Culver City standouts. For the girls, senior Morgan Maddox placed fourth in the invitational 400 meters with a time of 54.44. On the last race of the night after 9 p.m., the Centaur boys 4×400 meter relay team of Dante Mayrant, his twin brother Duaine Mayrant, Asher Samuel and Kingston Waring placed third in the invitational race. The invitational events consisted of the top track and field athletes in the nation. The Centaurs next meet will be at Mira Costa on Tuesday, April 16, at 3 p.m.
The baseball team is currently 15-4 overall, but they are 1-3 in the Bay league which means they need to win more league games if they expect to make the playoffs. They are currently in fifth place with five league games remaining. There are six teams in the league. Their next two league games are home games against Peninsula on Friday at 3:30 p.m. and against Palos Verdes at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 17.
Another team that has playoff aspirations is the girls’ softball team. They are currently 7-8 overall and 1-2 in the Bay league. The Lady Centaurs also need to win more league games if they expect to advance to the playoffs. Their next home game is Monday, April 15, at 3:30 p.m. against Redondo Union or Palos Verdes.
The biggest event of the sports week at Culver City high school is the Centaur Volleyball Invitational that starts at 8 a.m. on Saturday when the Centaurs battle St. Monica. Culver City faces Bishop Alemany at 10 a.m. and takes on Hawthorne at 1 p.m. If they win those matches, they will make it to the semifinals. If they win their semifinal game, they will be in the finals. Because the Centaurs are 2-12 overall their Invitational is their Super Bowl.
The boys’ and girls’ lacrosse teams will not make the playoffs this year. The girls’ team is currently 1-6 and the boys’ team is 2-6. The Lady Centaurs travel to Santa Monica on Friday for a 3:30 p.m. contest and they return home for a match against El Segundo on Wednesday at 5 p.m. The boys’ lacrosse team will travel to El Segundo on Monday for a 5:30 p.m. contest.
