The Culver City high boys and girls soccer teams are looking to continue their elite play in the Ocean league this week when both teams battle Hawthorne on Friday. The boys will face the Cougars on the Culver City high school campus at 6 p.m. and the girls will play Hawthorne on the road on Friday at 4 p.m.
Both teams started the week in first place in the Ocean league but the girls dropped to second when they were beaten 4-0 by first place Santa Monica last Monday at Santa Monica.
On a beautiful afternoon in Santa Monica the Centaurs were taken completely out of their game by an attacking Viking team that put pressure on the Centaurs defense the whole game. “We did not come out ready mentally,” said first year head coach, Elizabeth Cveyich after the game on Monday. “We were playing like a one man team and we were not connecting well together. After Santa Monica made their first goal we kind of fell flat.”
Cveyich continued to say, “We have won five straight league games but you can’t win them all. This was a good lesson for us. If we could have scored early I think that would have given us energy to try and win the game. Now we know what to work on because we are going to play Santa Monica again. Despite the loss I am still very proud of this team.”
The lady Centaurs are currently 10-6 overall and 5-1 in Ocean league play and they are ranked 9th in CIF Division 4. They are one game behind 6-0 Santa Monica, who is currently ranked 7th in Division 7.
After the Hawthorne game on Friday the girls face Santa Monica at home on Tuesday Feb. 7, at 4:45 p.m. on senior night and their last league game of the year will be Feb. 9, at Beverly Hills at 3 p.m.
The 8th ranked Division 4 boys soccer team is currently in first place in the Ocean league with a record of 5-0 and they are 14-5 overall. Their next game is Friday at home against Hawthorne at 6 p.m. On Monday they battle second place Santa Monica at home at 6 p.m. and on Tuesday they travel to Santa Monica for a 5 p.m. contest. They last league game of the year is Feb. 9, against third place Beverly Hills on the road.
The 14-7 and 4-2 girls basketball team will play Hawthorne at Culver City on Friday at 6 p.m. and they travel to Santa Monica on Feb. 7, at 6 p.m. They will finish league play against Beverly Hills at home on Feb. 9, at 6 p.m.
The boys’ basketball team is currently 8-15 and 3-3. They face Hawthorne Friday at home at 7:30 p.m. They travel to Santa Monica on Feb. 7, at 7:30 p.m. and their regular season final is against Beverly Hills at home on Feb. 9, at 7:30 p.m.
