Several members of the Culver City Fire Department took time off their busy schedule in order to read to children at the Culver City Julian Dixon Library. Organized by the Culver City Friends of the Library, a room-full of children was hosted at the library on Tuesday, Nov. 4.
“Any opportunity that we get to interact with the community is important to us,” Culver City Fire Chief David White said. “I think that is especially important for the children to see firefighters and be comfortable with who we are and what we do; this was a great opportunity to do that while we sat and read with the kids.”
Founded in 1922, the CCFD is one of 18 fire departments in the country to have obtained an ISO Class 1 rating and that has achieved accredited status from the Commission on Fire Accreditation International (CFAI). The department also provides residents, businesses and the community with paramedic advance life support services, fire suppression, fire prevention and education programs.
Members of the CCFD read bedtime stories to a group of more than 30 children and their parents. The children’s favorite for the night was “Curious George and the Firefighters” by H.A. Rey.
“We got a request from the friends of the library and we have a crew who does that,” Chief White said. “Our entire department, anybody, would love to do this. We do this frequently: it isn’t a one-time deal as we are involved with a lot of events. We will send our truck company, which the kids love.”
Firefighters also donned and demonstrated the gear they wear when fighting fires. The event was a considered a great success and a drew a special thank you to the library and Culver City Friends of the Library for including the Culver City Fire Department in this popular program.
“We enjoy interacting with the community and I am sure that the crew had fun,” Chief White said.
The library is located at 4975 Overland Ave. A fun arts and craft project followed storytime.
