Cancer survivor searching for missing service dog

HELP LOCATE—Lucy, shown here with a young couple, has gone missing and her owner is desperately trying to locate her. She was last seen around the Pen Mar Golf Course earlier this month.

If you have ever been to Westside Pet Clinic on Wilshire Boulevard in Santa Monica, a four-legged, tail-wagging door greeter named Lucy most likely welcomed you.

Lucy is the Clinic’s Medical Director, Dr. Antje Hinz’s sidekick, a happy tail-waggin’ grey pit-bull terrier whose job is to meet and greet all clinic visitors, and to help keep anxious pets calm.

She is also her registered emotional support service dog. Hinz, a 5-year aggressive breast cancer survivor, says Lucy is her Buddha, her purpose to keep going, and gives her an emotional lift that even the best-intentioned human caregivers can’t quite match.

On Sept. 7, while Hinz was on vacation in Germany, Lucy went missing from her pet-sitters residence in Venice, Calif. The last confirmed sighting of Lucy was at Pen Mar Golf Course, when cornered, she slipped out from under a fence.  Hinz, a veterinarian, has gained support from client and friend, Maria Menounos, E! News Anchor & CEO of Afterbuzztv.com.

Scores of community volunteers have posted and handed out thousands of lost dog posters and continue to scour the neighborhood, but they have not been able to find Lucy. Hinz hopes that the help from social media will be Lucy’s ticket home, and back to work. Lucy’s Facebook page has already garnered 2000 likes to date.

The Westside Pet Clinic is seeking the help of the public in bringing home their beloved door greeter and best friend.  There is $1,000 reward for Lucy’s safe return or for information leading to her safe return.
