Rep. Karen Bass (D-Culver City) went on the record to discuss the deal that Washington lawmakers reached, which will lift the debt ceiling in time to avoid crucial services being cut.
“For too long, Republican hostage takers were prepared to launch the U.S. economy
off the cliff,” Bass said, adding that President Obama and leading Democrats “put the brakes on that reckless agenda.”
“This is not the deal that I wanted, but this is the deal that we have,” she said. “We protected Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security despite Republican vows to end these entitlement programs our middle class families deserve.
“With Democrats fighting for our working families, Republicans demonstrated an outright hostility to the American values that our party champions. They demonstrated their loyalty to corporate America, to companies that ship jobs overseas, and to the wealthiest among us who are receiving tax breaks that were never asked for and are unnecessary.
“Today we voted to keep our economy from going off the cliff,” she said.
Bass represents the 33rd congressional district, which includes Los Angeles, Hollywood and Culver City.
