On Jan. 16, 2017, I went to the White House as a Reporter for Kid Scoop Media. I went there to write an article about President Obama and the Chicago Cubs. The Cubs had won the World Series for the first time in 108 years and they were there to celebrate with the President! This was President Obama’s last event at the White House.
The celebration took place in the East Room, which is the biggest room in the White House. When I walked in the room, there were tons of people blocking my view. They were reporters and photographers. I squished my way through the crowd until I was in the front. Then I saw three big chandeliers, which had tons of pretty carved and polished crystals on them. There were big golden curtains hanging on white walls. Also, there were gigantic fireplaces with huge mirrors over them. The mirrors had gold edges and there was a golden American Eagle at the top of each one. I was surprised that most of the candles in the room were actually fake. I was guessing that they would be real. Even funnier, the candles that were real, weren’t even lit!
The Chicago Cubs came into the room and lined up at the front. Then President Obama came out and stood at a podium in front of them. Behind President Obama was a painting of George Washington who was our first president. I learned that that painting is very famous because it was one of the things that First Lady Dolley Madison saved before the British set the White House on fire during the War of 1812. That painting is very important to our country and I was glad that I got to see it in real life.
The most fun thing was that I got to see President Obama in person. At my house in California, I used to wave at his helicopters when he flew over my house, but I could never actually see him and I wasn’t ever sure which helicopter was his. This time he was standing about 20 feet in front of me. Seeing him in person was very special. I will never forget that day.
