For 28 years, Golden China has been providing Culver City with a traditional Chinese dining experience. It’s the type of restaurant I remember fondly from my childhood. From the hot tea to the fortune cookie, going out for Chinese food was a memorable evening.
One of the joys of dining at Golden China is the extensive menu. There are more than 200 items to choose from. The lunch specials include more than 40 items and there are nearly 60 vegetarian choices. The food is fresh and they don’t use MSG.
For starters, I recommend the hot po-po plate. It’s an appetizer sampler for two that includes paper-wrapped chicken, fried wontons, barbecued spare ribs, egg rolls, fried shrimp and beef teriyaki.
For lunch or dinner entrees, it’s nearly impossible to choose wrong. But if you’re looking for a pointer, the Peking duck is fantastic. It’s served with a rich, dark sauce and soft doughy bread. Another exotic dish is the dragon and phoenix combination – one of the chef’s specials. It includes chicken and vegetables (the phoenix) opposite shrimp in a spicy sauce with diced onions (the dragon).
The prices are incredibly down-to-earth, particularly the specials. It’s a perfect place to have a sit-down lunch with officemates or to take the family out for dinner. And for larger gatherings, the banquet room seats 60 people. And for even larger gatherings, another 40 can dine in the main room.
Catering is available. Take-out and free delivery (for orders $15 and more within a three-mile radius) are also available. Golden China is located at 9018 Venice Blvd. It is open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. For more information, call (310) 559-0116 or 1117. The fax number is (310) 202-9173.
