Class is in session

“Ahh, the good ol’ sophomore slump.” You hear about it all the time, mostly in sports, but what about in life? What about in your career? What about when a restaurant group opens up an exact version of a successful predecessor?

Now, Public School 310 isn’t Grill Concepts’ (Daily Grill and The Grill on the Alley) second ever restaurant, but it is the second version of their popular Public School 612.

This is the Westside version, a more restaurant feel compared to the after-work bar feel that the downtown spot offers. So, where exactly does that sophomore slump tie into this whole thing… that’s the thing, it doesn’t.

310 takes off from exactly where 612 still stands. It’s welcoming, original, and not only gets the taste buds spinning, but your memories as well.

With subtle hints of your elementary classroom all-around, you can’t but help to think about the days growing up, attending school with some of your best friends.

And then a waiter walks by with a cold brew and a cutting board of cured meats and artisan cheeses. Just like that, you’re back to reality.

I got a chance to attend the soft-opening for the restaurant this past Friday, and although I consider myself a huge foodie, this was my first of its kind.

I didn’t know what exactly to expect but I am a fan of the downtown digs, so I was hoping for something good—and that’s exactly what I got.

The Atmosphere – I thought the atmosphere was on point. People were having a great time, the lighting was perfect, and the noise level wasn’t bad at all.

People sitting at tables along the edge of the restaurant were close enough to each other but still far enough where they can have a private conversation.

The bar area, booths, and outdoor seating were all set up well and offer a different setting depending on your mood.

The Service – I thought the service was great. My date and I were sat right away and greeted by our waitress within seconds.

She seemed to know about every beer and cocktail on the list and even offered up some of her favorites. I was pretty impressed with her familiarity with the dinner menu as well.

As the night went on, a manager came by to make sure everything was going well. There was never a long period of time where somebody didn’t come up to check on us and make sure we were all right.

The Drinks – Probably one of the strongest aspects of the PS 310 experience. This was truly a “schooling” in the liquid department.

The beers they offer are awesome and cover a wide variety of options. The wine and cocktail list aren’t nearly as deep in numbers, but just as deep in taste.

The Food – I though the food was good, but it could have been better. We started off with the Cutting Board- a selection of artisan cheeses (good stinkyness), cured meats, and a few other additions.

For our entrees, we had the Kale Caesar and the New York Strip. Both needed a little help but the flavors were still good. For dessert, a trip back to my childhood with a twist… PJ&J cookies with milk. Again, still needs a little help but the idea was there.

Based on the rest of the menu, there are options for everybody. It truly is an eclectic menu that will please even the pickiest of eaters.

The foundation has strongly been set for Public School 310. I’m looking forward to visiting again in the near future, either for dinner or “recess.” Welcome to the block.
