A combination barbecue, yard sale and fundraiser for Robert Zirgulis, Culver City School Board candidate and Rescue Education California attracted about 200 people last Saturday.

“We were swamped in the morning by bargain hunters getting deals for a good cause,” said Zirgulis. “Kids were donating 10 cents to get a stuffed teddy bear, T-shirts and dishware sold for a quarter and old records and CDs for 50 cents.”

Teachers, classified employees, CCUSD employees and students were given a 50% discount on all items purchased including burgers and hotdogs.

More than 40 people signed the petition for Prop. 1481, Oil Extraction Tax to Rescue Education,” according to Zirgulis.

“California is the only major oil producing state that has no tax on oil extracted. This initiative will bring $3 billion to our schools without letting the oil companies pass on the tax to the people,” he proposed.

Zirgulis says he plans to donate the approximately 100 books that went unsold to the Culver City School District.
