There are several key components that make up a good sports program. No. 1 one is winning and No. 2 is making the playoffs. Winning a championship is just icing on the cake. Right now four Culver City high school teams are eating cake. Boys soccer, girls soccer, girls basketball and girls water polo made the 2016-17 CIF playoffs and a fifth team, boys basketball missed the playoffs by one game. Four out of five are great numbers.
The Ocean League champion boys soccer team will host a first round game against Lompoc on Friday at 3 p.m. The Centaurs finished the regular season with an overall record of 17-6 and their league record was 9-1. Their only league loss was in double overtime to Santa Monica. If they win their first playoff game, the second round will be played on Wednesday, Feb. 22.
The girls soccer team will host their first round playoff game today, (Thursday) at 3 p.m. They will face the winner of a game that was played last Tuesday between Marymount and Cabrillo of Lompoc. If they win the first round game the second round game will be played Tuesday, Feb.21. The lady Centaurs finished their regular season with an overall record of 12-8 and they were 7-3 in Ocean league play.
The girls’ basketball team will take a five to six hour bus ride today (Thursday) to battle Arroyo Grande. The Centaurs regular season record was 17-8 and their second place league record was 7-3.
The girls’ water polo team played their CIF playoff game last Tuesday against Xavier Prep. If they win that game they played their second round game last Wednesday against Junpa Valley. The water polo team finished their regular season with an overall record of 7-13. They were the third best team in the Ocean league.
