Mario has more than pizza

Common sense has long dictated that, when ordering from a pizza restaurant–not an Italian restaurant by the way, but a specialist pizza joint–don’t order one of the pasta dishes that it often feels like they feel obliged to have on the menu, as opposed to wanting them there.

This is especially true when you’re ordering from a fast food pizza chain. Nobody needs to be eating pasta from Little Caesars or Pizza Hut. The rule can be a little murkier, however, when dealing with a mom and pop place that genuinely takes pride in its food.

“Mario’s Pizza remains one of the most popular in Culver City thanks to its fresh offerings and classic pizzas,” they say online. “Give their menu a try and see what all the fuss is about. If you’re feeling hungry, don’t hesitate. Enjoy the top dishes Culver City has to offer. This restaurant is known for Cheese Pizza. Try it for yourself and see what the fuss is about. It’s not just pizza. Try french fries for a delicious addition to your meal. Even the biggest appetite can be satisfied here. Mario’s Pizza has been a Slice partner for five years. This local business is a feature of the community it serves.”

In fact, Mario’s is doing itself a disservice by only highlighting its cheese pizza and fries. The pasta section of the menu, which might usually just have a penne and red sauce dish, is actually overflowing with the likes of Linguini Carbonara, Cheese Tortellini, Penne Checca, and Ricotta and Spinach Ravioli.

That said, we felt compelled to try the lasagna, if for no other reason than lasagna cooked in a pizza oven is amazing. The cheese goes crispy when placed under the high heat.

Sadly, we couldn’t determine if that had happened here. Any evidence of the browning of the cheese was covered up by the meat sauce swimming over it. But that’s not a complaint.

The sauce is perfectly delicious. Not overly seasoned, the flavor of the tomato, onion and meat blend beautifully with the herbs to create a vibrant meat sauce. The pasta is also perfectly cooked – soft yet firm, it keeps the integrity of the dish intact. The cheese is stringy and rich, topping off the dish majestically.

The lasagna is served with two pieces of herb-encrusted bread, which is a real treat. By itself, it’s warm, soft and crusty. But it also provides the ideal vehicle for mopping any remaining sauce.

Which is super, Mario!
