First, the Culver City newspapers, the Culver City News and the Culver City Observer would like to thank George Laase, one of the best sports photographers in the Los Angeles area. For many years Laase has made Culver City High School sports come to life through the lens of his Nikon.
When it comes to Culver City High School, Laase never says “no.” There is an old saying in journalism, a picture is worth a thousand words.
Once again, the Centaurs produced a lifetime of memories on the field, court and track during the 2023-2024 school year.
Beginning with the second place Bay league football team in the fall to great performances on the baseball diamond and at the California State Track and Field meet in the spring Culver City athletes proved to be some of the best in the state.
The football team was 9-4 and they competed in the CIF playoffs. The baseball team captured first place in the Bay league, made it to the CIF semifinals and finished the season with one of the best baseball records in Culver City history at 25-5.
The boys’ basketball team finished their second place Bay league season with a record of 19-9 and they also advanced to the CIF playoffs. The boys’ track 4×400 relay team placed fourth in the state and the boys water polo team was 19-17 playing against some of the toughest competition in Southern California.
On the girls’ side the basketball team placed third in the Bay league at 15-13 and they advanced to the CIF playoffs. The soccer team was 12-8-3 and came in fourth in a very good Bay league and the lacrosse team took first place in their league with a 5-0 record and they were 9-7 overall and made it to the CIF playoffs. The volleyball team was 19-14 and they made it all the way to the CIF semifinals. The girls water polo team was 13-12 and they also made it to the CIF playoffs and the girls track team had one of the fastest runners in the state on their roster. Her name is Morgan Maddox and she placed second in the 200-meters and third in the 400-meters at the state meet a few weeks ago.
Overall, all of the Centaur teams were competitive, and they showcased great athletic talent. “C” House will be back in the fall, winter and spring.
