The Culver City High School football team will try to recover from a disappointing loss to Palos Verdes last Friday when they travel to Santa Monica high school on Friday to face the Vikings at 7 p.m. on the Santa Monica high school campus.

For many years Santa Monica’s home football games were played at Santa Monica College but not this year.

Culver City goes into the last regular season game with an overall record of 6-3 and they are 3-1 which is good enough for second place in the six team Bay League.

Palos Verdes is in first place with a record 9-0 and 4-0.  Santa Monica is 6-3 overall and 1-3 in the Bay League. Sometimes a tough loss can motivate a team to get back on the winning track and the Centaurs hope that will be the case on Friday against Santa Monica.

“Santa Monica is a well-coached team,” said Culver City head coach Jahmal Wright in a phone interview last Sunday. “There head coach Carter Paysinger comes from a football family. We know what we must do, and that means focusing on ourselves. We need to focus on every play and be the best version of ourselves.”

To stop Santa Monica the Centaurs need to slow down sophomore quarterback Wyatt Brown, receiver Griffin Seals and running back Caden Mccallum. Brown has thrown for 1,998 yards. Seals has caught 56 passes for 839 yards and Mccallum has run for 880 yards.

Once again, the Culver City defense will be tested but on the flip side the Santa Monica defense will have to put the brakes on the Centaurs offense led by senior quarterback Sammy Silvia and receivers Myles Singleton and Braylon Singleton.

Last Friday against Palos Verdes Silvia completed 22 out of 39 passes for 359 yards and three touchdowns. Myles Singleton caught eight passes for 81 yards and one touchdown, and his brother Braylon Singleton caught six passes for 92 yards.  “Sammy had a very good game, and we knew Palos Verdes would have problems with our fast receivers.” said Wright.

On defense against Palos Verdes linebacker J.R. Kirkwood had eight solo tackles and six assisted tackles and defensive back Brandon Cash Mahoney had eight solo tackles and six assisted tackles.

The final score in the Palos Verdes game was 34-31. “We just ran out of time,” said Wright. “I am really proud of our team. We were right there but we fell a little short. It’s definitely something we can look at as a game that can help us once we get into the playoffs in a few weeks.”
