Midwest-based singer and songwriter Julia Haile released two singles around the holidays, and she’s embarking on a short tour to get the word out. She’s an exciting talent that has opened for the likes of George Clinton and Emily King, and this may very well be a big year for her. She plays the Cinema Bar on Sunday, and she told the CCN about what Culver can expect…
When did you start playing and performing?
I began performing in bands and collaborative groups out of college where I studied vocal performance. And after years of being part of some awesome groups and recording music I’m putting out “solo” work for the first time. This band has evolved with my long-time bandmate, guitarist Tim Braun. And really, I’m still figuring out what it is.
Describe your sound/style?
My sound has developed over the years as a result of loving a wide variety of music and having built a strong foundation. Soul? Yes. Pop? Sometimes. I always want to convey a richness that makes people instantly feel good. My goal is warmth and welcoming tones. I write what I love to sing. So I don’t hold back if something doesn’t feel like what I’m used to. I follow the music.
What are your career highlights so far?
Most recently I was given the opportunity to participate in an artist residency in Paris, FR. Facilitated by the MiRR Collective (FR), The Kemper Foundation and Folk Alliance International, the experience of collaborating with new artists was extraordinary. I have also had the pleasure of opening for some amazing artists over the years. George Clinton, Emily King and Adia Victoria are some of my personal favorites so those were awesome moments.
What recorded music is available — particularly the most recent?
Just before the holidays I released two singles, “Heavy Rotation” and “Set Out.” I also recorded a live session after the residency in Paris, FR. Music mixed and Video dropping very soon on Youtube!
Have you performed at the Cinema Bar before?
I never have! I’m looking forward to loving it.
What can the audience expect from the set this time?
Our set will be mostly original songs with some of my favorites mixed in. I have new tunes I can’t wait for you people to hear. I’m looking forward to trying them out with a new audience.
What else do you have coming up?
You can count on lots of new music coming down the line. New singles coming May 2023!
