When you look at the high school girls’ basketball teams in the Bay league, you realize why the league is one of the most competitive in the CIF Southern Section. Culver City, Mira Costa, Redondo Union, Santa Monica and Peninsula all have winning records. At press time the combined records for the six teams were 67-41. Palos Verdes is the only team in the league with a losing record. Culver City is 12-5 overall and 1-2 in the Bay league. Redondo Union is currently in fi rst place followed by Mira Costa, Peninsula, Santa Monica, Culver City and Palos Verdes. Despite a fi fth place standing Culver City’s long time head coach Julian Anderson is excited to be in such competitive league. “I love the league to be honest with you. It’s a great league. A lot of these teams are well coached and some of them have been battled tested this year. Peninsula has been battled tested and Redondo in Redondo. Mira Costa has been playing well. Every game will be something to look forward to.” If there is a team and coaches that can break through the upper echelon of the tough Bay league it is Culver City. “This is a very persistent team,” said Anderson, talking about his team during a phone interview this week. “They push through even bad games, and they fi ght

hard. That’s the makeup of this team. If there was one word I could use to describe this team that would be togetherness.” If the Lady Centaurs expect to make the CIF playoffs they need to execute better according to their coach. Because of their lack of size, they will also need to shoot at a higher percentage, so the taller teams won’t be able to capitalize on their superior rebounding edge. Anderson also talked about the challenges of coaching in a pandemic controlled season. “The hardest part about coaching this year is watching the girls do everything they can to do and not be able to play a full schedule that they deserve. To watch a group of seniors put in the amount of time and effort and have their season cut short, it hurts. Some colleges are looking at some of our seniors, so they need to play as many games as possible.” The Centaurs play a home game on Friday against Peninsula at 5:30 p.m. Call the school to see if fans are allowed to attend the game.
