Usually I am proud of the decisions made by our city administrators and Culver City City Council. This week, not so.
I read in the News that a lease agreement has been signed with the Friends of the Culver City Scout House to fix up the hut on Culver Boulevard. Like Gary Silbiger, I question how such a “deal” could go forward without public discussion. I would urge the city of Culver City to revisit this ill-advised decision.
Many cities have been cutting their ties to the Boy Scouts of America in light of their adamant stands against human rights. At a time when our country is recognizing the need to afford [lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender] citizens basic rights, the Boy Scouts of America is one organization that is counter to this position. Take a look at the Wikipedia article about scouting and you will see a long list of court cases against government agencies that show deference and preference to the BSA.
Any deal with this organization is a bad deal, no matter how sweet $120,OOO sounds. The year 2012 is a perfect opportunity to tear down that “old shack” and also tear down one more layer of city support for prejudice.
