Sunny days are in store for Sunny

Not too long ago—a week to be exact—Sunny, then named Shady, waited on death row for execution. Through no fault of her own, she was taken to the local animal shelter. Why? Because she was too old.

I saw her and my heart broke. I couldn’t let her languish there. I couldn’t bear the thought of her being put to sleep. And so I decided to find her a home.

I put her story on Facebook, hoping I would find a rescue or foster home for her. I was blown away with the response. My inbox was overflowing with messages for this sweet senior—112 in human years. She received a handmade collar and leash from someone. A healer offered to do a free session for her. Donations for her care came rolling in—one after the other.

Then I received a message from Petco. They posted about Sunny on their own Facebook page and received more than ten thousand “likes” and over one thousand “shares”. Yes, this senior girl certainly made an impact on the internet.

Petco sent several gift cards for her and offered a year supply of food. They said her story had gotten more attention than anything they ever posted about prior. I was flabbergasted.

And then I brought her home. A visit to my vet, Dr. Gebroe, brought some sad news. Seems this sunny girl has arthritis in her back legs and a tumor on her thigh. Yes, the tumor is most likely cancer.

I don’t know how much time she has left, but I do know, she will be loved. She has fit seamlessly into our home. Gabby is her new best friend. She even poses for me—in wigs and sunglasses no less.

The outpouring of love has been amazing. She may not know it, but she has touched a chord in many human souls. Who knows, maybe she’s even made a difference for other senior dogs abandoned to shelters across the country.

I’ll be sure to keep you updated on this very special girl.
