Peeling the layers back from the 2012 Audi A4 model line begins to reveal exactly what Audi means in their current “truth in engineering” brand message. It’s about visible, tangible, tactile, quality in design, engineering, and styling. It’s a know-how that’s applied in ways that are useful and contribute to the unique Audi experience.
Audi says its A4 is the biggest, fastest, and most fuel-efficient vehicle in the sport sedan category. A big claim, considering the A4 plays on the same field as the likes of BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Lexus. It features an athletic design, luxurious interior, and the famous 2.0-liter turbo-charged engine. The A4 was the first Audi sedan to contain the brand’s signature LED lighting, and it debuted the now familiar open-front cowl Audi design language visible through the Audi lineup.
The 2.0 liter turbocharged TFSI gasoline direct injection engine provides the power of a six-cylinder in a four-cylinder package, delivering 211-bhp at 258 lb-ft of torque. There are a three transmission choices: eight-speed Tiptronic transmission with Dynamic Stability Program, a six-speed manual, or a multitronic eight-speed Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) with Sport shift program.
The interior of all Audi A4 models offers spaciousness and convenience for drivers and passengers. Craftsmanship is evident in the leather seating surfaces, including the newly available fine Nappa leather covered door armrests and in other materials such as brushed aluminum or available wood inlays.
Available tech features include Audi Navigation and Audi music interface, both adding pure enjoyment to the driving experience. Entertainment is provided by an Audi six-channel stereo system with ten speakers, or an available Bang & Olufsen 505-watt, 14 speaker sound system. A SiriusXM Satellite Radio three-month trial subscription is included.
Audi’s S-line is among the most respected high-performance packages in the business. The S4 is the hot-rod of the A4 line, and the bar has been raised on this agile performance sedan that delivers sporty design and true performance character. The magic starts with the 3.0T direct-injection V6 engine generating 333-hp and 325 lb-ft. of torque. Mated to a six-speed manual transmission or a seven-speed S-tronic automatic transmission, both are fitted with quattro permanent all-wheel drive. For added performance, the available sport rear differential with mechanical torque vectoring helps transfer power to the wheels where the most grip is available accelerating the S4 out of turns. It’s an expert canyon-carver.
All A4’s are available with Quattro permanent all-wheel drive. There are three model choices (sedan, Avant, S4) and three gearbox choices (multitronic, manual, tiptronic) in the A4 model range. Pricing starts at $32,500 up to $46,300 in the A4 range, and $47,300 to $55,400 in the S4 range. Fuel economy ranges from 21-mpg up to 30-mpg, depending on model, equipment, driving style and conditions. The Audi A4 model line is covered by Audi’s standard factory warranty.
